When It's Time to Repair Windows

Leaking Windows

If you see an area of dampness beneath your window, or notice that the wood around it is soft or decaying, it might be time to consider a window repair. Mildew and mold thrive in excess moisture which can cause various issues within your home. They can affect indoor air quality, lead to sagging of drywall and worsen allergy symptoms. If left unchecked, they can also cause structural damage to the structure of the house.

Most of the time, a single or small group of these wooden supports may be damaged by wind or rain, leaving cracks in the window. You can repair the majority of these brittle and decaying components.

First, clean the affected areas with a rag and an ammonia-based cleaner that won't leave any residue. Get rid of any rotting or loose pieces and cut the intersections of the painted vertical and horizontal window muntins using an exact knife. After trimming the intersections using painter's masking tape, you can use the tape to tape off the lower part of the window frame. Apply a thick coat of white paint to the areas you lightly painted in the initial pass. Let the paint completely dry prior to removing the masking tape and applying the second coat.

If the problem is more serious like an hourglass-shaped fracture in the middle of the window, it's better to replace the sash. In these cases, you'll need to look for a replacement that is similar to the existing window in both the design and size.

If you want to save money you can also put in an attached grid window. These windows are made of a complete glass pane that has a series of muntins, which are glued to the surface. This creates a split appearance. These windows are not as efficient in terms of energy efficiency as traditional windows.

If you're looking for a simple method to modernize your windows, think about installing a new drip cap in order to stop water from getting into the window frame. Broken Sashes & Frames
