In the past the Korean scientific community was hesitant about engaging with the creationists out of fear of giving the movement more credibility. However, silence is no longer an option.

The STR has been campaigning to remove content from textbooks that describe evolution, such as the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestral bird's ancestor. This is only one aspect of how the development paradigm has evolved.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a concept in science that explains the evolution of genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adapt to their environment which can result in changes in genes or even complete genomes. These changes could over generations lead to the creation of new species. Natural selection is the most popular theory of evolution. It describes how individuals with traits that are advantageous are more likely to reproduce and survive than those with disadvantageous ones. As time passes, this difference in reproduction could lead to the development of completely new species.

The term "evolution" comes from the Latin word meaning unrolling or revealing, but the concept has had a variety of meanings as it has taken form in the fields of science and other fields. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to change into a new species. Etienne Geoffroy St.Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist student who coined the term "transmutation" to describe this view. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, attacked the idea of evolution, and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.

In recent years evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living creatures develop characteristics that increase their chances of survival or ability to produce offspring. Over time, genetic variability can cause a population develop new physical traits or biological functions. The variation in gene frequencies is called natural selection, and it drives most evolutionary changes. They argue that evolution is not possible because it requires the creation of a miracle, and the scientists who founded modern science eschewed miracles for fear that they would lose credibility.

Some creationists believe in both naturalistic evolution and special creation, and call their belief "theistic evolution." This is also known as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of species created." This theory states that God creates the original species and then allows these to evolve over time. These evolution changes will eventually result in new species that are similar to the original.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in one event called the Great Flood. Creationists believe that all the species of the beginning were created at the same time and then slowly evolved. They also reject the concept of abiogenesis and argue that the self-replicating creation of organisms from nonliving matter is not possible.

In general, the creationists are opposed to the teaching of evolution in schools. This position is supported by a myriad of professional associations such as the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education, the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, some scientists and educational institutions are more flexible and permit the inclusion of both evolution and creationism in their curriculum.

What exactly is Creationism in Korea?

When people think about creationism, many of them think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolutionist movement. The publishers of high school textbooks announced recently that they would remove the mention of evolution in their textbooks. A group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research, has led the drive. STR has achieved its first victory in removing instances of the evolution of the horse and an avian ancestor called the Archeopteryx from textbooks. It is now focusing on removing excerpts from Darwin's infamous finch research and on human evolution, too.

STR claims that it has the backing of 4,000 families and individual members. Its mission, it states is to cleanse the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which paints a negative view for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American Creationists in the nation. A survey of trainees in biology found that half didn't believe in evolution. The reasons for this aren't entirely clear, but could include religious beliefs or the absence of creation scientists in the US.

The KACR has achieved many things in the past through lectures and seminar events. It publishes a bimonthly journal called Creation and the book. The most notable of these is a text on the natural sciences that has a creationist viewpoint, which has sparked interest among college students. In 1991, a professor together with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught to students today.

On August 6 and 7, 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. It was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of a few thousand.
