The side panel can be lifted by itself however it isn't recommended as this increases the chance of your child falling out of the cot. However, the safety locking mechanism means that it will only stay down when attached to the bed properly. This feature is fantastic for peace of mind if you're breastfeeding and require frequent nighttime feeds.
