WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades will give you a an increase in specific statistics. Each upgrade increases the level of an item by +3. Each upgrade also increases an unspecified substat.

Upgraded gear is generally more useful, unless the item is not required by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a large variance in stats (like eth Titan weapons). Upgrades are less important for the latter due to the need to roll an exact version.

Recycle Points

The upgrader for items allows players to upgrade item their gear to a higher level by supplying the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any kind of weapon or armor. However, the item used for the upgrade will be consumed forever and can't be used again. Upgrades can be applied to Enchantments.

The upgrader can be found in all major cities, and can be visited at any time to upgrade your gear. To keep your gear current, it is recommended that you visit the upgrader each couple of weeks.

The cost of upgrades will depend on the current level of the item being upgraded however, they will always be less expensive than buying new equipment from other sources. Upgrades such as upgrading a Benthic chest up to the level of ilvl385 will cost you 20 recycle points. If you purchase a similar item, it will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used for weapon, armor, tool, and accessory upgrades. They can be bought by players from NPCs that sell upgrades to items in exchange for various currencies, and can be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be used on any weapon, tool or armor. The button will display the item's next level of upgrade, in the event that there are enough materials.

Upgrade costs differ based on the slot for the item level upgrade and the current item upgrade level. For example weapons cost more than gloves, bracers or bracers. Each step costs 15 Flightstones and a variety of crests, with certain upgrades offering discounts to lower the cost of Flightstones or the crests used. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain degree, it can be degraded and returned to the upgrader for a lesser amount of both currency types.

Upgraders for items are available in a variety of locations on the main island, as well as a few outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade discount as well as a chance to get a brand new upgrade recipe. The discount on upgrades increases with the number of items that are being upgraded. It can also be increased by having players complete some specific achievements or quests.

Unlike Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II there is no upgrader for items in the beginning of Icewind Dale. Instead the NPCs that are available to facilitate upgrades require various methods, which is both an improvement as well as a disadvantage.

In Season 3, the upgrade items system was tweaked a bit, with some new features added. After the player has upgraded to a specific level for an armor slot, upgrading other items to the same level will cost less. This is true even if the items are from another set of equipment.

The amount of Valorstones required to upgrade is reduced and the discount is available across all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests required for upgrades is also cut and is not available until players achieve certain milestones in their achievement.

Crests

Players have a variety of choices when it comes to upgrading their equipment in WoW. Flightstones are an option that is accessible to all players for upgrading. Crests are more specialized and are utilized during specific item level upgrades. Crests are an essential part of the Dragonflight gear progression system introduced in 10.1 and are available in four ranks.

The first thing to note is that crests are only able to be spent on gear of a specific rank, and every rank has different requirements for upgrading. The easiest and most straightforward upgrade is 15 crests. The most complex upgrade requires up to 20 crests, depending on the type or gear that is being upgraded.

Players can earn crests through working through content that is of the appropriate level, which involves walking around and performing outdoor activities for gear of lower tiers, dungeons or raids of any difficulty for higher-tier items, or Mythic+ heroic raid bosses and dungeons for gear that is used in the endgame. The crests can then be exchanged with an upgrader such as Cuzolth or Vaskarn in Valdrakken for the appropriate upgrade steps and routes.

The new currency system isn't too difficult to use, however it brings some modifications to the upgrade process. For instance, item level Upgrade when a piece of equipment reaches the highest level of upgrading for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic), it won't require Flightstones to be upgraded. This is to allow players to upgrade their gear up to the highest level possible for all their characters rather than relying solely on seasonal loot.

It's also essential to use crests with care, since they are only used for one purpose. For instance, it's a good idea use all of your Whelpling-rank crests on the best gear you have available, and then keep Drake and Wyrm crests to use for the next set of upgrades you plan on making. This is particularly applicable to items like trinkets and rings that take up multiple slots. The discount for the entire account will only be applicable if all slots on the character are filled with top-quality equipment.
