Lolita's Personality

Lolita's Care

Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to retire from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also would like her to be relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's reintegration back into the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped that Lolita could suffer a similar fate. However, she was never given the chance to return to the sea.

Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her at risk. They cause harm to her health by forcing Lolita to perform for tourists. They push her to the limit with high-speed circles and head-first diving, which exposes her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. In addition, they keep her in an incredibly small tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.

Fortunately, in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her an ancestor, on a plan to eventually transport her to open waters. The plan would have included a facility in Washington's west coast, where she could live for the duration of her life, receive human medical care and be monitored by researchers. Lolita's Diet
