The best way to keep your home tidy is to use a robot vacuum. It will pick up pet hair, dust, and other debris on surfaces.

Some robots are able to sync with smart assistants such as Alexa or Google Assistant to provide a hands-free environment. Look for models that recharge and then resume cleaning where they left off.

1. iRobot S8

This smart robot mop and vacuum combo is a great option for a wide range of households. It can be used to vacuum and mop and has a great navigation system that includes both GPS and laser sensors, and has a wide range of controls and features accessible via the app. It also has a handy feature that lets you add cleaning zones to certain areas that need extra attention, and also to keep Out zones where you don't want it to move. It also gets software updates, like the other Roomba products, that improve the quality of the product over time.

It's costly, but it's also among the most advanced robot vacuums ZDNet has evaluated. It's got a huge battery that can vacuum an entire home in less than two hours. It also switches between mopping and vacuuming with the touch of the button. And unlike other self-emptying robots that require you to empty the dust bin after each run, it automatically emptys itself into the larger waste container that is above its charging dock.

It also has a number of other features, including intelligent obstacle avoidance that uses cameras and processor-powered smarts to detect obstacles. It rarely gets derailed or trapped during a cleaning process, and it's the best robot mopping machine in avoiding power cables and other objects I've tested. It's not as precise at detecting pet waste or other dangers.

2. Eufy RoboVac Hybrid X8

While Anker-owned Eufy has earned an impact in budget robot vacuums, it's not yet an all-in-one model that can also mop. That's changed with the X8 Hybrid, which has an impressive set of modern features that can compete against more expensive models.

The laser navigation is the main selling point of this machine. Previous Eufy devices have built up an outline of your home by using infrared sensors and bumping into things but the X8's laser mapping system is much more accurate. It also takes a lot less time to build up an accurate picture of your space and stores multiple maps, which is ideal for multi-floor homes.

The X8 is a great vacuum cleaner for floors with no dust. It is able to effortlessly sling debris under the side brushes and into its 400ml dustbin. Its tyres are also very adept at hugging corners and edges, despite being circular. It's not the best cat litter scooper, however our tests have shown it is able to remove around 90 percent of the fur from hard floors.

The basic mopping mode utilizes the same reservoir of water as the vacuuming mode. While this is great for spills that aren't too big but you cannot limit the amount of water it uses and this will reduce its effectiveness when dealing with more serious staining. It does, however, do an admirable job of picking up pet hair, with a higher speed of pickup than the Roborock S7.

3. Miele RX2

Miele's RX2 robotic vacuum is renowned for its quiet, effective appliances. It has a beautiful design, a great navigation system, and excellent cleaning power. It has some oddities in its operation that prevent it from being named the best smart robot vacuum.

Similar to the latest models of iRobot, the RX2 features dual-sensor mapping that utilizes a LIDAR sensor to map out the space and two 3D scanning cameras to detect and avoid obstacles (like furniture legs or pet waste) in real time. Once the room is identified and assigned, you can designate virtual no-go areas and sections that you would like to be the robot. You can also initiate a manual clean or manually change the cleaning mode, watch a live feed from the onboard cameras and more on the main screen.

The RX2's sensors are effective by registering furniture and obstructions in real-time. Its sweeping and suction powers are exceptional, getting rid of surface litter from carpets with medium pile and also removing dust that has been deposited on floors. It's not the fastest robotics on the market. Like many other robots it's not a great climber and has trouble with things like metal threshold transition strips.

Some people buy robot vacuums for the convenience of setting up a schedule in an app, only to forget about them for weeks. But it's important that a machine can get the job done that's why our ZDNet staff tested and reviewed several of the most well-known models to help you find the right one for your home.

4. Shark ION

This budget robovac is a robot that is similar to other, but has a few more features and is more efficient. Its smart mapping system generates 3D and 2D maps of your home and uses them to navigate and avoid obstacles. It's even able to spot common obstacles like furniture legs and power cords in real time. This combination of sensors together with a bump sensor, and an infrared drop sensor which keeps it off stairs make it one of the most flexible vacs we've tested.

It was able to walk over carpets with thick shags and did not get stuck (unlike the RoboVac 11s, or Roomba 690-). Its navigation abilities were impressive as well as its score for composite tests on carpet and bare floors beat out the competition, and it took in 98.5 percent of surface litter and embedded pet hair from our lab test samples.

The controls are more basic than those of the competition's. There's a cleaning button at the top and you can choose to start it using the app or voice commands with Alexa or Google Assistant. You can also schedule weekly or daily cleanings, create no-go zones, and look up the history of cleaning. Covered in stylish dark gray plastics, Ion feels sturdy and is attractive in your home. The dust bin on the rear is easy to empty and removing the filter just as simple.

5. Eufy 11S

If you're looking for a basic, no-frills robot vacuum for a reasonable price, the Eufy 11S is a great option. This model lacks some smart features such as Alexa integration and digital mapping, which are available in more expensive models. However, if you don't require these features, you can save money.

The robot is easy to setup and use. It doesn't require smartphone application or Wi-Fi pairing. However it does come with an remote control that lets you select between different modes and adjust suction levels. You can also assign the robotvac to a cleaning schedule.

During our tests during our tests, the 11S was very effective at getting rid of pet hair and dirt on hard floors and in low-pile carpets. Its slim profile made it possible to fit under furniture with low hanging and other objects that larger robots are unable to reach. It was able to go easily over thresholds of doorways and move from one floor type to another.

Like other robots, the 11S can be able to suck up objects, such as cords hoodie drawstrings, and cat toys. The manufacturer suggests you avoid this by keeping these objects off the ground and using a cord organizer when you can. It also recommends that you periodically clean the dustbin, replace the filters, and [empty] change or wash the brushes when necessary.

iRobot Roomba 990

The Roomba is iRobot’s flagship robot vacuum. It's expensive but it's the most powerful robot vacuum you can buy. Its self-navigating features and environmental mapping are a wonder to behold. It has more advanced automation than most of its competitors, such as the ability to set up virtual boundary markers using its mobile application. Although the application is a bit slow and the 980 can spin out a bit when moving over cables, it's still an extremely efficient robot vacuum.

One thing we love about the 980 is that it uses its iAdapt 2.0 navigation sensors and its visual simultaneous localisation and mapping technology (or vSLAM) to store the floor plan of your home. It then uses that information to create an efficient and consistent cleaning path for every cycle. The result is cleaner floors and a better robot vacuum cleaner than the majority of high-end robots.

Other features of the 980 include two multi-surface rubber brushes which pick up dirt from carpets and hard floors as well as a spinning brush that sweeps debris into the robotic vacuum's bin. Its floor tracking sensors help it navigate across furniture and along edges, and Cliff Detect keeps the Roomba from falling down stairs. It will also return to the base station for simple recharging in between sessions. The bin capacity and battery life of the 980 aren't as great as other robot vacuums. However, it's a reliable and solid machine that will keep floors clean for many hours.
