WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades provide a guaranteed boost to certain stats. Each upgrade increases item level by 3. Each upgrade also increases an unspecified substat.

The upgraded gear is usually more valuable, unless the item has low requirements by nature (like FB sorc shields) or a high stat variance (like eth Titan weapons). The latter see less value from upgrading due to the requirement to roll for a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The upgrader for items allows players to upgrade their gear to a higher item level by supplying the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of armor or weapon. The item used to upgrade the item is discarded and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be applied to the enchantments.

The upgrader is located in every major city, and can be visited at any time to upgrade your equipment. It is recommended to visit the upgrader at least once every few weeks to ensure that your equipment is up to date.

The cost of upgrades will vary based on the current level of the equipment being upgraded, but will always be cheaper than purchasing new gear from other sources. Upgrades such as upgrading a Benthic chest up to ilvl385 will cost you 20 recycle points. Buying a similar item will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used for weapon, armor, tool, and accessory upgrades. They are purchased by players through NPCs who sell upgrades for items in exchange for a variety of currencies, and may also be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be applied to any tool, weapon or armor. button, which displays an item's preview when it is upgraded in the event that the player has enough materials.

Upgrade costs vary depending on the item slot, and the current item level. For instance weapons are more expensive than gloves, bracers or bracers. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones plus a specific number of crests. Certain upgrades provide a discount on the Flightstones. Once an Item Level Upgrade is upgraded to a certain amount and is degraded, it can be sold and returned to the upgrader for a lower amount of both currency types.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader mod upgrader at start, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's Gate II. Instead, the NPCs that are available to help with upgrades must be acquired through various methods which is both an improvement and a drawback.

In Season 3 the upgrade system has been modified a bit, and numerous new features added. Once the player has upgraded to a certain level of item for an armor slot upgrading other items to the same level, will cost less. This is even if the items come from another set of gear.

Crests

This allows players to upgrade their equipment to the highest possible ilvl for all their characters rather than relying on seasonal loot.

Another important modification is that crests have one use and it's crucial to use them wisely. For instance, it's a good idea to utilize all of your Whelpling rank crests with the Best item upgrader equipment you have and keep Drake and Wyrm crests for the next round of upgrades you're planning to create. This is especially relevant for rings and trinkets that take up multiple slots on the character which can only be eligible to take advantage of the account-wide discount if all of the slots are filled with high-quality gear.
