For a long time the Korean scientific community avoided engaging with the creationists out of fear of giving the movement more credence. The silence is no longer a viable option.

The STR has been campaigning to remove content from textbooks that explain evolution, such as the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestral bird's ancestor. This is only one aspect of how the concept of development has changed.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a theory of science that explains changes in genetic traits over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adapt to their surroundings, which can cause variations in genes or even whole genomes. Over many generations the changes could result in the emergence of new species. The prevailing theory of evolution is called natural selection, which explains the process by which people with advantages survive and reproduce more frequently than those with disadvantages. In time, this disparity in reproduction can lead to the development of completely new species.

The word "evolution" originates from the Latin for revealing or unrolling has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has developed, both in science and in other fields. Some early evolutionists, including Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather), believed that existing species transformed into other species in a predetermined fashion. The term transmutation was coined by Lamarck's student embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire to describe this view. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 challenged this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the idea that existing species change into different species in a gradual and predictable way.

Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process through which living creatures develop traits that increase their chances of survival or producing offspring. In time the genetic variability could cause the emergence of entirely new physical or biological traits in a population. Natural selection is the process that drives the most evolutionary changes. However, non-genetic changes such as the increase in muscle mass due to diet or exercise cannot be considered examples of evolution since they're not inherited by the next generation.

Creationists make the argument that evolution is controversial in spite of the fact that it has been proven valid by a multitude of scientific tests and that it has stood the test of time. They argue that the theory shouldn't be taught at school. In South Korea, creationists have won a few victories in their campaign to exclude evolution from high school textbooks, including the removal of references to the evolutionary origins of humans as well as the Archaeopteryx feathered dinosaur believed to be an ancestral bird's ancestor.

What is Creationism?

The most common type of creationist is known as the YEC. They believe that God created the universe exactly in the way that is described in the Bible. In general, the creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. This is a position that is backed by a myriad of professional associations such as the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education as well as the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, some researchers and educational institutions are more flexible, and permit the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curricula.

What exactly is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of the concept of creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of high school textbooks have recently declared that they will be removing references to evolution from their textbooks. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body which is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) has been the driving force behind this campaign. The STR has won its first victory by removing from textbooks examples of the evolution and ancestor of the avian, the Archeopteryx. Its sights are now set on removing excerpts from Darwin's notorious finch research and on human evolution, too.

STR claims that it has the support of 4000 families and 에볼루션바카라사이트 individuals. Its goal, it says is to clear the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" that paints an unflattering image for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American creationists in the country. A survey of trainee biology teachers revealed that a majority do not believe in evolution. The causes are not certain, but could be related to religion or the absence of creation scientists in the country.

The KACR has achieved a number of things through its lectures and seminar events. It publishes a bimonthly journal called Creation and a book. One of these was an educational textbook on natural sciences that had a creationist perspective. This led to an interest in the college community. In 1991, a professor together with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught in the present.

On August 6th and 7th of 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. It was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of over a thousand. KACR and its members have been giving talks on creation science at major seminaries too. KACR is planning to create a Creation Science Education Center.
