Choosing a Double Pram and Pushchair

A well-designed double pram or pushchair can simplify the lives of families, especially on busy footpaths or in shops and stores. Select a model that offers ample storage space for nappies as well as snacks and other necessities.

Tandem

The announcement that you are expecting a child is among life's most exciting experiences. But, once the excitement fades and reality sinks in, you could be faced with a multitude of decisions regarding how to prepare your family for the arrival of your little one or ones. One of the most important aspects to consider is choosing the right pram or pushchair.

Tandem prams, also referred as "in-line" double prams, are a classic design that has two seats or bassinets placed side by side. The front seat is usually cushioned and reclines to a flat angle, making it suitable for infants and the second seat is more upright and can be used by toddlers from around three years old. Some models have seats that can be reversible, so you can choose whether your children face towards each other or gaze at you. Many tandems can be converted to one pushchair when your oldest child is no longer required to have the second seat.

In terms of cost the tandem is cheaper than a twin pushchair and can be an excellent choice for parents who want to save money but not compromising on safety or convenience. However, the drawback of a tandem is that it may feel long and heavy to steer, especially when you're bumping up or down kerbs. It is often less stable than a twin pram, particularly if the older child is seated at the front. A tandem can be difficult to fit on public transport, and it can be difficult to navigate narrow roads.

The iCandy Peach is a popular image-conscious model that's a great choice for a singleton parent who is looking for something that is sleek however, the tandem mode can make it feel quite large and heavy when pushing. It has a clever frame that expands widthways to allow for the addition of the second seat, and is compatible with many combinations of carrycots, buggy seats and car seats (two at a time or in separate). The iCandy Wave is another lightweight tandem option that is easy to use and compatible with a variety of car seats and carrycots.

Side by side

There are many aspects to think about when selecting a double pram or pushchair. There are numerous configuration options to choose from, whether you're purchasing for twins or close-in-age siblings. Tandem prams, also known as side-by-side prams, are popular choices because they can be configured so that the infant can be seated in the bassinet on top while the toddler or older child is sitting in the second chair.

Some models have reversible seats that allow you to customize the layout of your family during the infant and toddler years. This lets you be able to watch your children at all times and gives them the chance to be a part of the journey while they walk.

Tandem prams are often all-terrain buggies or jogging ones which makes them ideal for outdoor adventures and in the park. They're also a good choice when you have to traverse narrow supermarket isles or checkouts, as they're generally smaller than single-seaters.

It's also quite light making it an ideal choice for families with smaller cars or a limited storage space.

Convertible

The top best double stroller prams and pushchairs can be used in a variety of ways and some are capable of changing seating configurations to meet the changing needs of your family. You can accommodate up to three children on the seat board or two toddlers in the seats, while still having room for shopping bags. Accessories such as rain covers are also available. Most convertible double pram stroller strollers are more spacious and heavier than single pushchairs because they are required to be capable of holding two or more children. The Graco Modes Nest2Grow is one instance of a low-cost convertible which is very user-friendly, however our test subjects felt it was a bit heavy for the money.

Some convertible double strollers like the Baby Jogger City Select 2 comes with a carrycot which is suitable for newborns. This helps to reduce the size of the double buggy stroller (click the next post) when not in use and makes it more compact. The City Select's innovative, one-handed folding impressed our test participants but it does require some time to master. It also feels quite nimble and responsive, despite it being bigger than other double strollers.

Another option that is affordable is the Cybex Mockingbird Single-to-Double Stroller. It can be converted from a parent facing infant car seat to a forward-facing toddler seat. The bassinet mode makes it a great option for infants.

For greater flexibility, opt for a dual-mode convertible such as the iCandy Peach. It's a slim double stroller that can hold two children in a tandem. It can also be used to make a tandem by adding a second seating kit. It feels fluid and agile, and our testers liked its sleek design. It's not quite as lightweight like some of the other models on our list however it does come with a huge basket that is useful for parents who are carrying bags full of toys and groceries.

Lightweight

Convertible double strollers are an excellent option for parents who already have a child and expect to have another. The iCandy Peach allows you to change from a single pushchair to a double pushchair, with the addition of a toddler seat or the brand's optional carrycot (which is suitable for sleep overs). Our test subjects were impressed by how comfortable the seats are and loved the fact that both recline to different positions, feature built-in leg and foot support and have UPF 50+ canopy with windows that peek out. The rear seat can be raised high so that the older child can stand on it to reach the basket of shopping.

Cher stated that the only negative aspect of the iCandy Peach was its weight. But she felt this was offset by the fact that it's easy to move and has plenty of storage and cup holders for parents and their children as well as seat-back pockets and a large basket under the seat. Cher also liked that the seats can be reversed so that they be positioned to face each other, which is great for siblings who like to talk and interact while out and out and about.

A lighter, but equally impressive option is the Delta Children LX side-by-side stroller, which weighs only 18 lbs, is super compact and has a self-standing fold, making it easy to transport and store in your trunk or at home. Parents appreciate the high-quality materials and workmanship, and the low price. The only downsides are that the seats do not recline as much compared to other models we've tried and the rear seat isn't as prominent due to its location - it is raised higher than the first seat.

The Joolz Geo 3 is another popular choice. It's slim, sleek, easy to steer, and comes with a lifetime warranty. It's important to keep in mind that despite their narrower design, side by side prams are still more spacious than tandem and in-line doubles. They may be difficult to navigate on crowded footpaths or in shops. They're also shorter and therefore more maneuverable in tight spaces.
